Is it time we focus on the soft?
Studies like the Harvard Study of Adult Development https://www.adultdevelopmentstudy.org/ show that so called " soft metrics" such as strong social connections, consistent attention on physical and mental well-being, meaningful relationships, and pursuing what is meaningful for us, is what most significantly contributes to a person's success, happiness and longevity.
Sounds like it makes sense, doesnt it?
The question for me is why have we placed so much emphasis as a society, especially highlighted on social media but equally in how we formally educate on the "visible metrics" such as the material possessions we own, the suburb we live in of the job title that we posses?
Is this emphasis on these visible metrics one of the contributing factors to the worsening mental crisis we are facing?
Even if someones goals are purley in creating wealth, although it sounds corny, research continues to shows the true fulfillment lies in the pursuit and the challenge of this, not in the destination and understanding this distinction is critical to happiness.
For me, that's the "WHY" behind the Step into Action movement, building a community where movement through walking, connection and meaningful pursuit, or the " soft metrics" are where you can build your best and most fulfilling life.
