Why am I about to do this to myself?

September 26, 2024

In just over a week, I'm embarking on my most daunting personal challenge yet: I'll be aiming to cover 55 kilometers each day for 7 days, which is the equivalent of doing nine marathons in seven days. Just writing that down gives me pause and makes me question why I'm attempting this.

My previous walk or step challenges have been completed in one go, so this will be a new experience. I'll have to back up day after day, which will be a significant mental and physical test for my nearly 50-year-old legs.

This isn't about fundraising or PR for mental health (although that would be great!).

It's purely a personal test of limits and an invitation for anyone who is interested to join me for free and virtually in this challenge, pushing yourself within your own capabilities.

My real motivation?

9 Australians lose their lives to suicide every day, and 1 in 5 Australians experiences mental illness each year. We need to change this, more needs to be done.

If by taking a few steps, I can inspire, motivate, or make a difference in even one person's life, that's motivation enough and my ultimate goal. Walking is powerful for both physical and mental health, and I believe it can be a catalyst for positive change.

I know there will be pain and potential injuries along the way, but I'm determined to see this through and for me it is only just the beginning.

BTW: Anyone based in Sydney who would like to tackle a few kilometers with me in that week, please reach out, as I'm looking for a few more walking partners.

PS Hope you like my training photo, this is one of my early functional training sessions
